Located in North East Christchurch adjoining a golf course and a short ride from Bottle Lake Forest, this simple home makes use of the surrounding context. A modest form of three gables set atop extruded boxes comprise the West form, opening into large volumes of space and glass looking out to the eastern golf course views. Two pavilions connected by a large living space with a reading loft above define the functional layout of this family home.
Situated in Christchurch’s leafy suburb of Fendalton, this house certainly stands out from its surroundings. The architectural form was inspired by the folding of a paper poppy, designed to be bold but embrace the character of the neighbourhood around it. The programme provides a large four car garage, a large outdoor area and adjacent pool, with living spaces arranged in a linear fashion between them.
Nestled into Clifton Hill, this home is designed to engage with the panoramic view of Sumner Township below and Pegasus Bay in the distance at every opportunity.
Organised onto four terraces, the home steps down the hill from the main entrance to a secondary entrance at the lower point. The program allows an apartment style living on the upper levels with space on the lower level to allow expansion when the extended family visit
This inner-north suburban Christchurch home sits within a low density setting lying east of Elmwood Park. This project resulted from the 2011 Christchurch Earthquake which claimed the previous home.
Replacing the original 1940’s Modernist house, this home takes a ‘restorative’ architectural approach informing a language that is recognisable in this setting as a modern interpretation of the predecessor with respect to form, location and colour.
Using a simple and recognisable architectural language which is distinctly domestic with a contemporary twist, this semi-rural home sits on the upper slopes of Christchurch’s Cashmere Hills. Retaining established gardens, a parking court to the south, a swimming pool and terrace to the north and a tennis court to the east, this home carefully addresses the established landscape setting of the original home (claimed by the 2011 Christchurch Earthquake).
Designed with unashamed modernist references, this home comprises of two concrete forms with a natural cedar form sitting slightly skew, spanning between them. The façade peels from the axis exposing the interior and along with the crank of the cedar bridging element, the home’s elevation is articulated to address and reference the gentle winding path of the Ōtākaro/Avon River.
Wrapping around the Port Hills of Christchurch, the brief was to create a home that captured the panoramic city and mountain views.
The home narrates the concept of subterranean; slices into the land and rewards visitors with texture and sharp shapes, slowly revealing the expansive views once invited into the depths of the home.
Nestled within Strowan, a low density, inner northern suburb of Christchurch the brief was to create a family home of warmth and personality with a little bit of quirkiness!
The home was to be highly private when viewed from the busy street but open to the north facing garden. The interior spaces were to open up for entertaining, yet be compartmentalised for the more intimate, day to day needs of the family.
This Kilmore Street Apartment complex, in Christchurch central city, converts an existing earthquake damaged commercial building, and constructs a new apartment building adjacent, creating a mixed-use complex. This multi-unit development takes advantage of the tree lined street, views to the north and hills to the south, with large openings, private outdoor living spaces and large steel balconies projecting from the building. The complex offers a landscaped communal space for residents to meet and enjoy.
Mt Pleasant Road
In a semi-rural location, high on a spur of Christchurch’s Port Hills and overlooking the panoramic views from the Southern Alps to the west, through the Kaikoura Range, to Scarborough, this family home provides a sanctuary from the harsh, wind-swept environment.
Lying on the hill like a leaf on a flat surface, a single pitch roof spans across twin pavilions. Chamfers and subtle plan rotations create a dynamic parapet line and variation in internal volume.
Nestled in a semi-rural corner of Hanmer Springs in North Canterbury, this retreat was conceived as an inter-generational family asset. Similar to establishing a camp site, the architecture deliberately challenges our understanding of a dwelling to engage the family in a manner of living that fosters the qualities of holiday making.
Decorated and furnished using objects found and loved, this retreat is crafted for memory making.
Sited on a peninsular formed by the Liffey River and a manmade lake within a rural Canterbury township, this home has been designed to optimise the views and comfortably accommodate the retired owners, yet expandable to a more generous home to accommodate extended family.
A butterfly roof elegantly floats above the living spaces. This inverted roof plane is lined in the rich finish of Meranti Ply complimenting the rich, natural and warm palate of finishes.
Designed to replace a home lost in the 2010/2011 earthquake sequence, the brief was to embrace the qualities of mid-century modern architecture. The design anchors to the notion that no structural steel was to be used. This ‘rule’ was established during the design phase, initially to control the architecture and to guide the aesthetic and materiality. During the course of the project it became a narrative to engage all those who worked on it!
This building is located at the foot of the Port Hills within an industrial area linking the port of Lyttelton to Christchurch City.
Designed to house a business whose previous premises were seriously damaged in the 2011 Christchurch Earthquake, the twisted geometry of the roof slowly reveals the full volume of this building reflecting the qualities of innovation central to the strategic position of this international company.
Design brief was to create a high density, low rise apartment complex which provides an ‘entry level’ home for the inner-city dweller. The program organises 40 apartments around an expansive internal courtyard creating a sense of community between the occupants while offering individuals opportunity for privacy.
